How do I make a dining room table without using metal hardware?

I’d like to make a dining room table using traditional Woodworking Techniques and would like to know if anyone had plans for one available. I was thinking about replacing the screws with dowels/wood glue to hold the legs/border together, then something similar to hold the table top to the frame. Would this work?

You can use mortise and tenon joinery and dowel joinery for most connections in the table. But there is one problem. You must connect the table top to the frame by some means that permits the table top to expand and contract without breaking away from the frame or warping the top. That is easily done with metal connectors made for that purpose, but if you are determined to use no metal, you have to have a substitute other than a hard connection.

One solution is to rest the table on the frame with no fixed connection. use dowels or square posts for positioning pins in 4 corners of the frame. Make holes in the underside of the table top which will fit over the positioning pins. The holes should be bigger than the pins so the table top can float as it expands and contracts.
